Positano and Saraceno d’Oro: A Story of Sea, Hospitality and Tradition
Positano is one of the most iconic destinations of the Amalfi Coast and a symbol of the Italian Dolce Vita, but it began as a small fishing village shaped by the sea, trade, and maritime life. According to legend, it was founded by Poseidon and dedicated to the nymph Pasitea, while in Roman times it hosted a seaside villa beneath today’s Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
During the Middle Ages it became part of the Duchy of Amalfi, with agriculture, fishing, and coastal trade shaping its terraced landscape of lemons, olives, and vineyards. Between the 9th and 16th centuries the coast was also threatened by pirate raids, leading to the construction of defensive Saracen Towers such as Torre Sponda, Torre Trasita, and Torre Fornillo, used as a warning network and still visible today as symbols of resilience. After centuries centered on the sea and local trade, Positano reinvented itself in the 20th century as an international tourist destination, attracting artists and travelers, and transforming its heritage into a tradition of hospitality reflected today in places like Saraceno d’Oro, founded in 1964, which celebrates the town’s history and identity.
The Story of Saraceno d’Oro
Saraceno d’Oro was founded in 1964 by Domenico and Carmela Milo, who turned a historic building in central Positano into a small restaurant. At a time when the town was opening to tourism but still kept its fishing- village identity, they focused on authentic hospitality, simple cuisine, and a warm family atmosphere. The name pays tribute to the Saracen towers and to Positano’s sea- shaped history. From the beginning, the philosophy has been based on local ingredients, traditional recipes, and genuine welcome. Over the years, the restaurant grew with Positano, attracting visitors from around the world while maintaining its familiar character.
The Milo family carried the founders’ legacy forward across generations, preserving the same values. In 2023, this evolution was reflected in a renewed identity with “Sadò”, a modern interpretation that looks ahead while staying rooted in tradition. The story of Saraceno d’Oro mirrors that of Positano itself: a town born from the sea, shaped by resilience, and transformed into a global destination of hospitality. Dining here means taking part in this continuity, where each dish reflects the meeting of land and sea and a sixty- year family tradition. It is more than a restaurant: it is a living expression of Positano’s identity, where memory becomes experience.
A Place Where History Comes to Life Saraceno d’Oro
is designed as an immersive tribute to Positano’s heritage. Architectural and decorative details—from mosaic- inspired floors to Mediterranean color palettes of blue, white, and gold—evoke the sea, the town, and its history of cultural exchange. Even the tableware reflects this vision, with carefully presented dishes and motifs inspired by local craftsmanship. Everything is designed to connect cuisine, design, and history. Saraceno d’Oro is therefore not only a place to eat, but a space where Positano’s identity is preserved and expressed through atmosphere, detail, and tradition.
