A taste of authentic Venice: welcome to Osteria da Pampo
In the quiet, understated heart of the island of Sant’Elena -the green lung of central Venice, yet far from the busiest tourist routes – lies a small gem of Venetian gastronomy: Osteria da Pampo. Here, history lives in walls steeped in memories, in carefully set tables, and in the warm smiles of those who open the door: Paola and Martina, mother and daughter, and their team, who welcome every guest with the warmth of a family.
Paola has always had a deep passion for cooking, starting at home before turning her talent into a profession at the age of 40. After gaining experience across Italy, she finally arrived in Venice and, together with her daughter Martina, took over the management of Osteria da Pampo. She lovingly oversees every recipe, adding that unique, homemade touch that makes each dish so special.
Martina entered the world of hospitality after studying Chinese and spending time abroad. She manages the dining room, the bar, and the selection of wines and beverages, always on the lookout for the finest products and the latest trends to ensure every guest enjoys an exceptional experience.
The osteria has been open for over 40 years- first as a bar serving cicchetti and later as a restaurant-and has been run by the current owners since 2016. At Pampo, the atmosphere evokes a traditional Venetian osteria from days gone by: simple and genuine. Illustrated placemats, carefully collected soup tureens, welcoming furnishings, and outdoor tables overlooking Calle Chinotto with a beautiful view of the lagoon on summer evenings invite you to pause, savor, and breathe in the peace of the island locals call “Venice’s forest,” just 20 minutes from Piazza San Marco.
Stepping through the door, you enter not just a restaurant, but a story. Every dish weaves together Venetian and Ligurian traditions — the latter being the owners’ homeland — in a harmonious embrace from east to west, with great attention to preserving the original recipes of historic dishes.
The ingredients are local, genuine, and carefully chosen. Fish comes from Venetian fishermen’s nets; vegetables from the island of Sant’Erasmo, “Venice’s garden”; cured meats and cheeses from small producers in Veneto and Friuli. The menu may vary daily, following the seasons and the availability of fresh catch and produce.
Among the specialties that make Osteria da Pampo unique: traditional sarde in saor, marinated with stewed onions, raisins, and pine nuts, just like in the old days; the grand mixed fry (golden, crispy fish and vegetables, perfect for sharing); and the “Maritime Republic Challenge”: two versions of cod (creamy Venetian baccalà mantecato and Genoese brandacujun with potatoes) served side by side on the plate.
Then there are the house favorites: spaghetti alla busara, in our version with prawns in a slightly spicy red sauce evoking the fragrance of the sea, and in summer, Ligurian pesto, creating a bridge of flavors between different coasts. And to finish, desserts are strictly homemade, including our famous tiramisu, also available in a fruit version, ending the meal on a sweet note.
Dining at Osteria da Pampo is an experience: not just nourishment, but immersion in tradition, a rediscovery of ancient rhythms, and the enjoyment of authentic, unique flavors. Soft lighting, a peaceful garden, gentle chatter, and sincere hospitality all invite you to linger, sharing a meal slowly, just as Venetians once did after returning from fishing or the market.
Unlike the crowd of tourist-oriented venues filling the city, Osteria da Pampo remains true to itself: no pomp, no compromises, just the beauty of things done well, prepared with love and respect for tradition. This makes it a rare find in one of Venice’s most authentic residential neighborhoods.
You can also stop by for a visit to the bar, from breakfast in the morning to aperitivo in the evening with “tramezzini” and “cicchetti”, including their excellent and carefully crafted meatballs. Or simply enjoy a relaxed afternoon snack with a delicious homemade dessert.
For those who love Italy as it truly is -not the polished version in guidebooks, but the authentic, simple, history- rich, warm version -Osteria da Pampo offers a sincere invitation: discover a different Venice. Come for a plate of seafood, stay for a warm embrace.
Welcome to the table.
